Translation for In-Game and Launcher chat

Automatic Translation for In-Game and Launcher Chat

W3Champions has a very international player base, and language differences can make communication difficult, particularly in team games.

It would be great if W3Champions could provide optional automatic translation for chat messages, especially in-game where manually selecting and translating messages would be impractical.

Helpful scenarios include:

  • During a pause: Players often use pause time to explain a technical problem, ask for a few minutes, or coordinate when the game can resume. Translation would help avoid misunderstandings such as whether someone is ready to unpause.
  • Team games: Quickly understanding messages such as “I’m being attacked,” “need help,” “expand here,” or “let’s push” can materially improve coordination.
  • Before the game starts: Players can communicate about positions, races, strategy, latency, observers, or other setup issues.
  • Technical problems: A player could explain disconnects, lag, keyboard problems, crashes, mouse/battery issues, or other problems without relying on everyone speaking the same language.
  • Sportsmanship: Messages such as “gg,” apologies, explanations, or friendly conversation could be understood by more players.
  • Arranging games through the launcher: Private messages and group chat could be translated when players are trying to organize teams, custom games, practice sessions, or tournaments.
  • Moderation and dispute prevention: Better understanding of what another player actually said could reduce misunderstandings caused simply by language barriers.

A possible implementation:

  • Players select their preferred language in the W3Champions launcher.
  • Incoming in-game chat is automatically translated into that language.
  • Keep the original message available alongside the translation.
  • Allow players to disable translation globally or for specific languages.
  • Launcher/private messages could support either automatic translation or a manual Translate option.
  • An MVP could initially support the most commonly used W3Champions languages, including English, Korean, Chinese, German, Russian, French, Spanish, and Portuguese.

Example during a pause

  1. Original Portuguese message:

Pausa por favor, o meu rato ficou sem bateria.

What an English-speaking player would see:

[Translated PT] Please pause, my mouse battery died.

  1. Original Chinese message:

请暂停一下,我的鼠标没电了。

What an English-speaking player would see:

[Translated ZH] Please pause, my mouse battery died.

This makes it immediately obvious that the message was translated and also shows which language the original player used.

This seems particularly well suited to modern lightweight translation models. It may not require a large general-purpose AI model or expensive GPU infrastructure, especially if W3Champions initially limits support to the most common language pairs.

The biggest value would be making communication between players effectively seamless without requiring anyone to leave the game or use an external translation tool.
